For my husband’s birthday he gave me one word for his cake: “Oreos.” I took that as a challenge and made an Oreo-forward layer cake that celebrates the cookie in every bite.
I wanted the Oreo flavor to shine, so I used a tender vanilla sponge studded with large Oreo chunks—think Oreo ice cream-sized pieces—rather than a chocolate cake that would overpower the cookies.
The frosting is an Oreo-infused American buttercream made with finely ground Oreos and a splash of the cream used to soak whole cookies. Between the layers I added milk-soaked Oreos for a nostalgic, melty bite.

Let’s Talk Details
Oreos are more than just “chocolate cookie with vanilla cream” if you love them—there’s a distinct cookies-and-cream profile that deserves its own stage. Many Oreo cake recipes use chocolate sponge, but that can mask the cookie’s unique flavor. A simple, moist vanilla cake lets the Oreos speak for themselves.
- Vanilla Cake – a 6-inch vanilla sponge loaded with large Oreo chunks so you get noticeable cookie bites instead of a crumbly dusting.
- American Buttercream – classic buttercream that’s been infused with Oreo-flavored cream and folded with finely ground Oreos for texture and flavor.
- Filling – whole Oreos soaked briefly in milk are layered between the cake strata for those nostalgic milk-and-cookie moments.
The Oreo Cake
- Cream butter and sugar together for 1–2 minutes with the whisk attachment until light.
- Add the oil and beat another 1–2 minutes.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating 30–60 seconds between each. Mix in sour cream and vanilla until just combined.
- Add half the dry ingredients, then the milk, then the remaining dry ingredients. Mix until the last streak of flour disappears.
- Fold in large Oreo chunks, taking care to keep the pieces sizeable rather than shredding them into crumbs.
- Divide batter evenly between three 6-inch pans (about 14 oz each).
- Bake 30–35 minutes until golden, the edges pull away from the pan, and the center springs back. Cool completely before frosting.
Tip: Chop Oreos into large chunks for the batter and reserve the small crumbs for the frosting so the cake stays moist and looks clean.

Oreo Frosting & Filling
The recipe yields just enough buttercream to frost the cake as shown. If you plan to add extra decorations, increase the frosting by 1.5x–2x.
- Soak Oreos in cream — split six large Oreos and let them sit in heavy cream while you make the buttercream.
- Grind the remaining Oreos in a food processor until very fine for texture in the frosting.
- Beat butter until pale and fluffy.
- Add powdered sugar and salt on low, then beat on medium-high for several minutes until smooth and no longer gritty.
- Mix in ground Oreos until evenly distributed.
- Strain the cream from the soaked Oreos and stream it into the frosting with vanilla, beating until light and fluffy.
Note: This frosting has a textured finish from the Oreo crumbs — it won’t be glass-smooth, and that’s part of its charm.

Put It All Together
- Place the first cake layer on a flat surface and trim if needed.
- Spread a thin layer of frosting (about half the amount you plan to use between layers).
- Arrange the milk-soaked Oreos on top of that thin layer. For mini Oreos you can leave them sandwiched; for full-size Oreos split them so slices are easier.
- Spread the remaining layer of frosting over the Oreos, stack the next layer, and repeat.
- Frost the outside of the cake with the remaining buttercream.
If the cake becomes unstable or the buttercream is too soft, chill the assembled cake for 20–30 minutes to firm it up before continuing.

Make It Cute
I kept the decoration simple: smooth sides, an unfinished ridge at the top, and a scattering of Oreo crumbs. If you want to dress it up, try:
- a dark or white chocolate drip
- arranging Oreo crumbs in a crescent shape
- piping frosting dollops alternating with whole Oreos
- using a textured cake scraper for visual interest
- adding crushed Oreos around the base of the cake

Serving & Storing
Before slicing, the frosted cake can sit uncovered at room temperature for one night or be refrigerated for up to a week.
Once sliced, cover open slices with plastic wrap, a cake dome, or store slices in an airtight container. At room temperature slices will keep one night; refrigerated they last up to a week.
To freeze, place individual slices in an airtight container, seal in a freezer bag, and freeze up to two months.
