Now that Shane is in first grade, his days are full. He spends about six hours at school, comes home with several types of homework, helps with light chores, and has recently taken to writing stories. At six years old, it’s still important for him to have time to relax and enjoy being a kid — and video games fit that role perfectly.

Shane has been a big fan of video games for a while, and his newest favorite is Yo-kai Watch for the Nintendo 3DS XL. Yo-kai Watch, a hit from Japan, has recently launched in the United States and is available on Nintendo 2DS and 3DS systems. The game and the TV show have been popular topics at Shane’s school, so he was thrilled to try it.

I had to try the game myself before giving it to him. The 3D animation is impressive even without 3D glasses, and the visuals remain sharp and appealing with the 3D effects turned off. Nintendo games have evolved considerably since the Game Boy era. Yo-kai Watch is charming, populated with mischievous characters, and encourages players to explore, use their imagination, and strategize. In the game, players discover and befriend Yo-kai, then assemble a team to battle other Yo-kai. It’s engaging and gets Shane thinking about his next move.

The game also proved useful on a recent trip. During our spring break drive to Colorado, Shane spent a lot of time playing Yo-kai Watch, which helped keep him entertained and made the journey easier for everyone.
Yo-kai Watch is available now wherever video games are sold, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $39.99. If you’re interested in the game, look for it through official retailers and the publisher’s information channels.
