As a registered dietitian, my goal is to show how versatile and tasty tofu can be. It’s affordable, widely available, and neutral in flavor, which makes it a perfect base for bold seasonings and crisp textures when prepared properly.
These air fryer tofu nuggets are an excellent example: a plain block of extra-firm tofu becomes a crunchy, satisfying bite with minimal effort. Even skeptics tend to love them.
Why you’ll love air fryer tofu nuggets
Crispy: Cornstarch creates the light, crunchy coating that makes these nuggets so satisfying.
Simple: This is one of the easiest tofu recipes you can make—quick and forgiving.
Vegan-friendly: Perfect for vegan, vegetarian, or omnivorous diets.
High in protein: Tofu provides a good amount of plant-based protein to support your nutrition goals.
Kid-approved: These nuggets are an approachable option for picky eaters and make a great weeknight meal.

Ingredients
To make crispy air fryer tofu nuggets you’ll need:
- 1 block extra-firm tofu
- Cornstarch (this is key for crunch)
- Neutral oil (canola, vegetable, avocado, or light olive oil)
- Spices: garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper (or any spices you prefer)
How to make
Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch and seasonings; set aside.
Remove the tofu from its packaging and pat it dry with a kitchen or paper towel.

Using your hands, tear the tofu into roughly 1-inch chunks. Texture and uneven edges are fine — they help the coating stick and get crunchy. Place the pieces in a large mixing bowl.
Add the oil and toss the tofu until it’s evenly coated.

Sprinkle the cornstarch and seasoning mixture over the tofu and toss until each piece is well coated.
Transfer the tofu to the air fryer basket in a single layer if possible. Cook for 12–15 minutes, shaking or tossing the basket every 4–5 minutes so the nuggets don’t stick together. They’re done when golden brown with crisp edges.

Alternative spices
If you want to switch up the flavor, try any of these spice blends:
- Curry powder
- Chili powder
- Sriracha seasoning
- Green goddess seasoning
- Ranch seasoning
- Elote seasoning
Note: many blends are more concentrated than plain garlic and onion powder, so start with a smaller amount and adjust to taste.
Expert tips
- Smaller pieces will cook faster; larger pieces will take longer.
- Nuggets often stick together during the first 5–10 minutes — shake the basket regularly and separate with tongs if needed.
- Air fryer temperatures vary by model; check frequently to prevent burning.
- If your air fryer runs hot, reduce the temperature to 375°F (190°C).

How to serve
These nuggets are versatile and pair well with many dishes. Try them:
- With fries and your favorite dip
- Topped on salads or grain bowls
- Tossed in sauces like buffalo, BBQ, or sweet Thai chili
- With vegetables and noodles in a stir-fry
- Inside wraps, such as buffalo tofu or a tofu Caesar wrap

Common questions
Yes, likely. I haven’t tested oven times and temperatures, so you may need to experiment—reduce the temperature slightly and keep an eye on the nuggets until you find the right timing for your oven.
They’re great with ketchup, mayo, mustard, honey mustard, ranch, plum sauce, or sweet and sour sauce. The neutral flavor of these nuggets pairs well with most sauces.
I use a compact, reliable model that performs well for this recipe. Choose an air fryer you trust and adjust time or temperature based on how it cooks.
