How to Make a The Very Hungry Caterpillar Pull-Apart Cupcake Cake

We are excited to share a cute pull-apart cupcake cake tutorial inspired by the beloved children’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.

This playful design makes a charming birthday cake or a sweet centerpiece for a baby shower.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar! Pull-Apart Cupcake Tutorial

The hungry caterpillar has made a delightful comeback in party themes, toys, and nursery decor. With that in mind, I decided to create a cupcake-cake version of this classic character — and you will love how simple and fun it is to assemble.

Mapping out the Cupcake Cake Design

If you haven’t made a pull-apart cupcake cake before, start by securing each cupcake to the board with a small dot of icing on the bottom. This keeps the cupcakes from shifting when you’re piping and decorating. For the caterpillar’s head I used a 4″ round cake placed at one end of the row of cupcakes.

Arrange the cupcakes in a staggered pattern so they nestle closely together — think of it like assembling a simple puzzle. Avoid large gaps so the design looks cohesive once decorated.

I used a medium-consistency crusting buttercream and filled piping bags fitted with a size 12 tip for outlining and larger details.

Let the buttercream piping begin!

Pipe alternating stripes over the cupcakes to create the caterpillar’s segmented body. I used colors inspired by the original story but added my own twist with varied hues and patterns.

Piping the caterpillar stripes

After piping, I smoothed some areas with a piece of Viva paper towel for a cleaner finish — this step is optional. A slightly textured, lumpy look is equally charming, so choose the finish you prefer.

Some stripes are intentionally thicker to give more dimension to the body. Most piping was done with tips 3 or 4 for the stripes and detail, while the top and bottom outlined borders were completed with a size 12 tip.

Textured piping and stripes

I enjoy adding playful patterns and varied piping to give the caterpillar extra personality. This is your chance to be creative — mix colors and textures to suit the party theme or your own taste.

Hungry Caterpillar Face and Final Details

To complete the caterpillar’s face, cover the 4″ round cake with pre-colored red fondant and smooth it into place. If you prefer not to use fondant, you can achieve a similar look with red buttercream instead.

After adding facial features and final touches, step back and admire your pull-apart cupcake caterpillar. It’s a cheerful display that’s easy for guests to serve and enjoy.

Here he is — ready for the party!
